Douglas Tilden - The Man and His Legacy by Mildred Albronda
183 pages, Hardcover, 1994

If there is a book that deserves to be placed on the coffee table of every deaf person and every teacher of Deaf studies in America, it is this one. It is an expansion of Albronda's earlier work: Douglas Tilden: Portrait of a Deaf Sculptor. After its publication, Tilden's daughter released her father's papers to the University of California's Bancroft library. This legacy proved to be a real treasure, enabling Albronda to come to grips with Tilden as man and artist . . . . (Eric Malzkuhn)

1892, Douglas Tilden made his bronze sculpture "Tired Boxer". His other work included the Mechanics Monument and Fountain at Bush and Market streets, the California Volunteers at Market and Dolores, Admission Day at Market and Post, as well as Father Junipero Serra and the Baseball Player, which were originally in Golden Gate Park. Mildred Albronda (d. 1998 at 86) wrote his definitive biography.

Theophilus Hope d'Estrella - The Magic Lantern Man by Mildred Albronda
140 pages, Softcover, 1885

An inspiring biography celebrating the life and work of Theophilus Hope D'Estrella, a Deaf teacher, lecturer, writer, artist, photographer, and philanthropist.

Mildred Albronda, a biographer who specialized in recounting the lives of California artists and a pioneer in making art and art history more accessible to the deaf. As a docent at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco, she understood the difficulties for the deaf in participating in the museum's guided tours and lectures. So she learned sign language and became a charter member of Docents of the Deaf. While working with the deaf, she became inspired to write about artists who had attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley. Her biography of the deaf photographer, Theophilus Hope d'Estrella - The Magic Lantern Man - was printed as a commemorative edition for the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the California School for the Deaf. She is especially remembered for authoring the definitive biography of the great deaf Berkeley sculptor, Douglas Tilden . . . . (Ken Stein)
